The humanitarian situation in Gaza City and surrounding areas has reached alarming levels
More than half a million people in the region are now facing famine conditions according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) — the first such declaration in the Middle East.
Over 12,000 children under five were found to be acutely malnourished in July alone; nearly 25 % of them suffered from the most severe form.
Humanitarian agencies report that only around 6,000 tonnes of wheat flour have entered the enclave recently, while 10,000 tonnes are urgently needed.
Community kitchens — which once provided hundreds of thousands of meals daily — have been forced to shut down due to lack of supplies and access.
A severe food-supply crisis is unfolding in Gaza City and the broader Gaza Strip, with major humanitarian agencies warning of rapidly deteriorating conditions. Since early March 2025, all border crossings into the Gaza Strip have been closed to most humanitarian and commercial shipments, blocking food and fuel.
Aid organisations are calling for:
Immediate reopening of border crossings and unhindered entry of food, fuel, and cooking supplies.
Prioritisation of vulnerable groups (children, pregnant women, displaced families) in food distribution.
Protection of transport and aid workers so that food can reach all areas of the city.
