Pakistan Emerges as Trusted Mediator Between US and Iran, Says UN Chief

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran, describing Islamabad as a “trusted” country capable of bringing opposing sides to the negotiating table.

Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Guterres said Pakistan had played a crucial role in efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He highlighted Islamabad’s ability to maintain communication with countries that have serious disagreements with one another.

“Pakistan is trusted and is trusted even by countries that are at odds with each other,” Guterres said, according to AFP.

The UN secretary-general expressed hope that Pakistan would continue its diplomatic efforts and succeed in helping the parties move towards peace.

“We can only wish that the efforts of Pakistan will go on and that they will be successful and will finally see peace in the Middle East,” he said.

Guterres also issued a strong appeal to all parties involved in the conflict, urging them to immediately end hostilities and return to diplomatic negotiations.

“I want to send a loud and clear message to all parties: end the conflict, return to diplomacy, fully restore navigational rights and freedoms in accordance with international law,” he said.

His remarks underscore Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role in efforts to de-escalate tensions between Washington and Tehran. Islamabad has maintained communication with both sides, positioning itself as a potential bridge between countries that remain deeply divided.

The UN chief’s comments also come amid wider international concerns over the continuing instability in the Middle East and its impact on regional peace, international security and freedom of navigation.

Guterres stressed that diplomacy remains the most effective path toward resolving the crisis, while welcoming Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue.

Pakistan’s role as a mediator could therefore provide an important diplomatic channel at a time when the international community is calling for an end to the conflict and a return to negotiations.
